Battlebridge Farm. Circa 1870. With thanks to Margaret Murrell.
(Margaret's great great grandfather is holding the reins.
Battlebridge Farm no longer exists, but was farmed together with Chilmead Farm.)

I wondered if I could contact Margaret as My Father worked at Chillmead farm and often helped out at Battlebridge farm from 1945-1963 I'm doing some research on the places I have been involved in over my life and wondered if she would be interested in contacting me and what connection she had with the farms and Merstham.

My father worked at Battlebridge Farm for many years milking cows for the farmer a F.Durman who also owned Chilmead Farm.A Mr Bristow also worked with my father who lived in the farmhouse. Mr Chalk would often help out at times

I spent many days with Alan Bristow who lived with his parents at Battlebridge Farm. His father was cowman.

Damage caused by parachute mine in Battlebridge Lane, Merstham. April 19th, 1941. Windsor Spice Ltd.

All Saints' Church.

The original All Saints' Church of South Merstham was built in 1897. On the evening of Saturday 19th April, 1941, a parachute mine landed, completely destroying the church, vicarage and nearby houses. Ten people were killed, including one of the vicar's sisters. The vicar and his 2nd sister were badly hurt.

This picture shows All Saints church in South Merstham in 1943, having been devastated by a parachuted land mine (meant for the nearby railway line) which killed 10 people in April 1941.

My father was church warden at All Saints from 1943 until 1951. We lived in Nutfield road and I went to Merstham school before going to Reigate grammar school when I was 11 years.I remember my father talking about the Canadiens building Canada Hall.

My godfather, Newton Hazel, was churchwarden of All Saints at least up to 1943. The Canadian Royal Engineers padre was billeted on him.He was responsible for getting his troops to build the little church which was consecrated in 1943. I was there that day.It is now Canada Hall. The padre was killed in Normandy in 1944.

Was there today,my uncle was a Canadian Engineer who helped to build CANADA HALL he was billeted in what is now called Rookwood House on the A25 many thanks for posting this he could be in the photo ?
